Chlorine for N-H

Chlorination of compounds with active hydrogen attached to nitrogen

The plate is carefully dried and then treated with an atmosphere of chlorine gas (HCl+KMnO4 ) for 10 minutes (e.g. in a covered cylinder). Excess adsorbed chlorine is removed with a stream of air (30 minutes).
The plate is the sprayed with a mixture of equal parts 1% potassium iodide and 1% starch. Compounds with active hydrogen attached to nitrogen, e.g. primary and secondary amines or amides, form blue spots.
