Silver nitrate

Silver nitrate

Silver nitrate (CAS 7761-88-8) reacts with aldehydes et.c. to give dark spots of metallic silver.

Silver nitrate/Ammonia

A 0.1M solution of silver nitrate (1.7g in 100mL water) is mixed with an equal part 5M ammonia (30mL 30% ammonia and 70mL water).
Reducing compounds give brown spots.
The reagent (silver nitrate/ammonia mixture) MUST be discarded since it forms an explosive precipitate on standing.

Silver nitrate/Sodium hydroxide

1mL half saturated silver nitrate solution (containing 1g) is diluted with 100 mL acetone. The TLC is dipped or sprayed with this solution and then sprayed with a mixture of equal parts 1M NaOH and methanol.
Brown spots appear immediatly. Some "non-reducing" compounds require heating.
